Examples of these types of foods are corn on the cob (cut off cob), apples (cut into bite sized pieces), meat on a bone (remove from the bone), raw vegetables (cute into bite-sized pieces), bagels and French bread (avoid using front teeth to tear these foods). These foods are hard foods that a patient is unable to bite right into with their front teeth. The second adjustment that will need to be made is the way that a patient eats certain foods. Examples of these types of foods are skittles, starburst, caramel, taffy, gum, beef jerky, ice, frozen candy, pretzels (hard, crunchy ones), kettle cooked chips, popcorn (the half-popped ones especially), almonds and other hard crunchy foods. These foods are sticky, chewy, hard and crunchy foods. The first adjustment is foods that have to be avoided. As a patient adjusts, they can begin to incorporate foods they regularly enjoy with a few adjustments. Foodĭuring the first couple of weeks as a patient is adjusting to their appliances, they may find it easier to enjoy softer foods that don’t require a lot of chewing. This will not only help to remove debris that gets caught in the Smartwires but along with flossing will help to maintain healthy gum tissue throughout treatment. A WaterPik/Water Flosser is an ideal addition to a patient’s hygiene products and routine. The Smartwires will however collect food that a normal brushing and flossing may not evacuate. One of the benefits of the INBRACE Smartwire is that you can brush and floss normally. If a patient accidentally swallows the wax, it is no big deal, it is safe to swallow! Brushing/Flossing Typically wax will stay in place until removed but will sometimes come off when eating or drinking. To apply wax, ensure the area is as dry as possible and apply a pea-sized piece of wax to the bracket causing the discomfort. With that said, wax should be used as the patient needs it to provide comfort directly related to discomfort as a result of the appliances. While wax will not inhibit the movement of the teeth, it should be used sparingly as the tongue needs to interact with the braces and wires to “toughen up” to create a better overall experience during treatment. Wax is used to provide comfort if/when the braces cause sores on a patient’s tongue. Over the counter pain medication can be taken for any tooth discomfort and all over the counter mouth rinses or oral relief aides are safe to use with INBRACE Wax The tongue will toughen up to the braces as these canker sores heal but wax should be used to ease a patient’s discomfort during this time. It is normal that a patient may experience canker sores on their tongue as they “rub” the braces and wires.

The other discomfort patient’s experience with INBRACE is related to their tongue. To overcome this, sing along with the radio, read aloud and just practice speaking generally.
